Gilberto Gil

July 31, 2010

Tonight I was acquainted with the son and daughter of Gilberto Gil, one of the more notable figures in Brazilian music (especially that of the Tropicalia movement circa 1967). I told Bem, Gilberto’s son, what an inspiration his father has been, in particular the album “1968” featuring Os Mutantes. Bem agreed that this was his father’s greatest record and went into story about how the album came to be.

Just like with Dylan, Gilberto and Os Mutantes took a chance and went electric in 1967. The response to this change was unanimously negative (crowds of thousands booing), so much in fact, that Gilberto was driven to record the album “1968” (despite the negative response) the following year. It’s amazing to notice how some of the greatest musical successes were often unappreciated by people during the time, especially albums that took chances.

Gilberto Gil is an incredible inspiration for me in that he was never swayed by popular opinion. He always followed his heart and intuition, be it in the realm of music, or in the arena of politics (Gilberto was Brazil’s Minister of Culture from 03 to 08.)

Check out these videos I found of Gilberto. One of Gil playing with Stevie Wonder, and the other, along with Os Mutantes on Brazilian TV.

Foes with Toes

July 22, 2010

“A picture’s worth a thousand words” says the Keebler elf, Corey Taylor etc. So what did we decide to do? Shoot a documentary of a thousand words or so, solely about our photo shoot because, well, we’re BEEEG and muy importante (I think this saying is Russian, and unfortunately, the exact translation is unknown… it means something along the lines of, “there are pygmy hippos in the water of the moon”.)

Jesse Dittmar, childhood friend, chill dude, insanely good photographer, spent a sweltering afternoon with us in our backyard in Bushwick (come visit! It sucks!), taking a couple different stylized shots we had in mind. One, a knock off an awkward family photo we pulled off the inappropriately named site, awkwardfamilyphotos.com . The other, a pretty loose concept of a living room vibe in the outdoors that sort of came together as the night went on.  By the end of the shoot, the picture included a goblet, harmonium, whale cane and whale guitar, Carl Jung’s “Red Book”, a fire pit, sweet attire, and marshmallows on skewers, and the dreamy members of Akudama them(our)shelves.

So scan through. Pics and vids below. Enjoy!

Reminder: We Are All ONE

July 19, 2010

This is it. This is really it. I mean, I’d try to write a couple funny lines, snide comments about how truly astonishing this video is, but HF has managed to take care of all that. Every irony and stereotype, it’s all in there.

I feel so grateful to have found a band that is Hannah’s field, and simultaneously, a little suspicious that Hannah and her djembe jivin’ sidekick are in fact brilliant con artists, tricking us all into believing heady tard rock is allowed and around.

At least wait around for Andy Ardenski’s drum solo/rap about, well, weed. Somewhere along the way, this man thought it was okay to partake in the world of vox, having been blessed with the nug-coated throat of a voice-boxed Nam-vet.

Sister Sierra’s Debut

July 15, 2010

Sister Sierra “Ya-Ya” Pia drops her debut single “embarrassing”, a catchy cut with outstanding vocals, strong melodic sensibility, “RightSaidFred with the philharmonic” type grooves, and cheeky lyrics we can all relate to. Drawing influences from the theater world as well as Disney Goddesses, she’s able to fuse the two styles together, forming a sound uniquely her own.

Skyler “S-Dawg” Pia also plays an integral role in the beat making, production, and tasteful backing vocals (think Fred Schneider (B-52s) meets super cat (Sugar Ray). The resulting collaboration between the two Pia’s (let us not forget Dad “C-Slice” Pia, throwing his two cents in with the three part harmony during the song’s climatic ending) is obviously very strong, and gives us high hopes for more tracks to come! Great Job Sierra and Sky, we love you both so much and are so proud of you!

And without further ado, I present to you “Embarrassing”!

Sick, I mean sick play on words. I’m typin’ here, tellin’ ya’ll you might like this vid, and BOOM! There’s the title. Yosemite, ya know?

I think this is very funny… by the end it gets concerning, but then I realized that everyone should be acting similarly excited when seeing a double rainbow. I mean, I’ve seen a handful of folk just this week, literally keeling over in celebration as a dude in an orange jersey kicks a round thing, made by an Indonesian adolescent, into a net, guarded by a dude in different colored drab. Its all pretty ridiculous at the end of the day. If you feel it, show it… we all need that extra initiative… something that says celebration is okay… something that reminds us not to be thinking about us thinking about others thinking about us all the time. It can be draining.

My next wish is to have someone equally excited for an AKUDAMA set. I’m gunna start with that someone being me!

Conscious Living

July 5, 2010

Take some time out of your day to watch Earthlings, an eye opening film about our dependency on animals. I know there’s never a great time to watch something that’s upsetting, but to turn a blind eye to the process in which animals are used for our food, clothes, research, entertainment and as companions, is to ignorantly allow these practices to continue and flourish. Education is power. Gain some perspective and make conscious choices. Happy 5th!

Don’t be turned off by the director loving up his Chihuahua in the intro… I’d send you to another link, but this stream is Gucci.

Super Smoothie- The Case Monster

July 2, 2010

“Are you guys into smoothies?” This is how I begin most of my conversations… I never really got past the five-year-old-birthday-party stage, where I contort my limbs in these awkward, Joe Cocker like motions, while literally just talking about whatever my dome piece is buzzing about. And then, as sent like a gift straight from the gods, we somehow end up talking about smoothies!

Anyways, I have some smoothie suggestions to really liven up your breakfast experience, and will supply you with endless energy throughout your day. Cause if you’re anything like me (playing wave race, then writing this blog, then playing wave race), you’ll need all the energy you can get!

The Case Monster:

Coconut water from a fresh young coconut

Coconut meat from a fresh young coconut (or coconut butter, or both) (great source of fat)

Some ice

½ avocado (good source of fat)

2 handfuls of frozen berries

Tablespoon of bee pollen (excellent source of protein)

Heaping spoonful of cacao powder (excellent source of iron, magnesium, and antioxidants)

Spoonful of Maca (excellent for protein, energy, libido)

Small spoonful of blue-green algae (excellent for chlorophyll)

A couple spoonfuls of hemp seeds (amazing protein)

3-5 leaves of any fresh green (kale, Swiss chard, romaine) *always make sure to rotate your greens in order to avoid the plant’s release of alkaloids, a defense system plants use to deter animals from over consuming a specific type of plant.

Some Cayenne Pepper (good to get yr blood moving, and the spice can help stop you from chugging)

Blend in a blender, put in a cup, and throw it in yr mouth!

This guy has the right idea.
